Tips to Alleviate Dry Skin
Your best skin can often be achieved with some small adjustments to your lifestyle and diet, and here is a list of tips that we have found to work best.
Excessive air conditioning in summer: Though these useful appliances offer relief in the heat, they pull water out of the air and can be quite drying. If you like to keep your house especially cool in the summertime, the air in your home is likely to be very dry.
Excessive heating in winter: As you probably know, heating significantly dries the air in your home. Using humidifiers helps, but consider lowering the temperature a little and do not sit close to the heat source, especially fireplaces.
Facing the Elements: When going outside in the sun or wind, use clothing and a protective balm to help prevent the effects of both. Many of our moisturizers have minerals and oils that help protect against the elements, however use sunscreen when spending longer times in direct sunlight.
Long hot showers: Though relaxing and warming, taking a hot shower rinses away your natural oils that help to retain moisture. Take fewer and cooler showers, and try putting some olive oil (1 tsp) and honey (1/4 cup) in your bath. Always moisturize after a shower or bath when skin is still damp.
Dead Skin Buildup: Exfoliate your skin weekly to better absorb moisture and treatment creams. A dry brush is useful for the skin on your body, and a facial exfoliator for the more delicate skin on your face/neck/decollete.
Chlorinated water: Chlorine strips natural oils from skin and can dry it out and leave it dehydrated. When washing face or adding water to your skin before applying moisturizer, it is best to use spring, filtered, or distilled water.
Avoid processed foods, and eat plenty of veggies, fish, and nuts. Be sure to include walnuts, salmon, broccoli, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, avocados, hemp hearts, pumpkin seeds, shitake mushrooms, and bone broth, which are very rich in nutrients and minerals that are beneficial for balancing and maintaining healthy skin. Also be sure to drink plenty of water to help your internal body to function best, and limit alcoholic drinks which is very dehydrating.
For stubborn dryness, supplement with zinc picolinate and vitamin B5. Also helpful are vitamins C and D, magnesium, and collagen. Be sure to consult with your health care practitioner before starting new supplements.
