Tips to Alleviate Sensitive or Reactive Skin

Your best skin can often be achieved with some small adjustments to your lifestyle and diet, and here is a list of tips that we have found to work best.

Carefully select your laundry detergent and avoid fabric softeners. Sensitivities to detergents and softeners can present themselves in different ways, so if your skin is reactive this is a good place to begin. Look for natural detergent options that are geared towards sensitive skin. and especially avoid ones with fragrances as they are designed to adhere to laundry and can also adhere to skin.

Long hot showers: Though relaxing and warming, taking a hot shower rinses away your natural oils that help to protect your skin and retain moisture. Take fewer and cooler showers, and try putting some olive oil (1 tsp) and honey (1/4 cup) in your bath.

Avoid sugar and dairy. This is a very important step and is easier said than done; however, if you make a consistent effort to read labels and not make exceptions, you will probably see amazing results. Pure stevia extract and fresh fruit are good alternatives to refined sugar or sugar alcohols.

Avoid processed foods, and eat plenty of veggies, fish, and nuts. Be sure to include walnuts, salmon, broccoli, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, kale, shiitake mushrooms, avocados, hemp hearts, pumpkin seeds, and bone broth, which are very rich in nutrients and minerals that are beneficial for balancing and maintaining healthy skin. Also, be sure to drink plenty of water to help your internal body to function best.

Limit or avoid alcohol. It is dehydrating and is often rich in sugar. It puts strain on the organs, and not only do you need your organs working optimally for your best skin, but your skin itself is your largest organ.

Coffee and spicy foods are often triggers, so best to avoid until things settle.

Steep 1 tsp. chopped fresh ginger in two cups of boiling water for 10 minutes and drink 1 cup every day. Ginger is wonderful for digestive health, which is wonderful for healthy skin.

Chlorinated water strips natural oils from the skin and can also dehydrate and cause sensitives. When washing your face or applying water with moisturizer, it is best to use spring, filtered, or distilled water.

Manage stress.  Exercise, go outside, and stay positive. Do not underestimate the value of a peaceful mind, it really can show on your skin.

For stubborn cases, supplement with zinc picolinate and vitamins C & D. Be sure to consult with your health care practitioner before starting new supplements.
